Jackson Milas

We are proud to present ‘December 21st’, the debut solo single from Australian artist and Pique-nique Recordings co-founder, Jackson Milas.

Premiered by Gilles Peterson during his BBC 6 Music show in November, ‘December 21st’ is available digitally now, with a limited 7” vinyl release containing an alternate take.

Arranged out multiple takes of improvisation in the spirit of the late Talk Talk albums, December 21st features Tim Lefebvre of David Bowie’s Blackstar band on Upright Bass, Robby Sinclair (Drums w/ Nick Murphy/Chet Faker) on drums and percussion, and Troy Simms on Alto Sax. Both songs were mixed by Dave Harrington (Darkside) in New York. Piano, rhodes, arrangement and production from Jackson Milas.

Previously, Jackson performed as the singer in Australian dream pop band, High Highs. Jackson’s debut EP ‘For Every Coast’ was released in August 2020. He is currently finishing his debut LP in Sydney, Australia.

"Killer! Sweet jazz for the autumn" - Gilles Peterson

A departure from North Africa and into the realm of jazz, it’s the debut solo work from the Sydney native Jackson Milas and the first single for his album dropping next year.

“December 21st” is a winter warmer in name and appearance. Arranged from multiple takes of improvisation in the spirit of late Talk Talk albums, it “echoes the feeling of being in a major city right before Christmas”, says Jackson, “when the place empties out and a sense of solitude begins to set in.”

Sonically, it comes as close to an embodiment of a warm, crackling fire as you could with four musicians: Tim Lefebvre of David Bowie’s Blackstar band on upright bass, Robby Sinclair on drums and percussion and Troy Simms on alto sax and Jackson on piano, arrangement and production. Former Nicolas Jaar collaborator Dave Harrington takes care of the mix, putting the finishing touches to a sublime introduction to a new artist and the diversification of a young label gearing up for an intriguing 2018.
