Unheard is a music series that explores listening, curiosity, and spontaneity through collaborative improvisation. An artist-in-residence leads three in-the-round performances throughout the year featuring rotating groups of multi-instrumentalists.
For his final edition of the year, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist William Alexander brings together three improvisers whose paths rarely cross but whose musical spirits align perfectly.
Trumpeter, composer, and producer Milena Casado, recently called “a revelation” by The New York Times, whose debut album on Candid Records moves seamlessly between acoustic tradition and electronic experimentation.
Joining her is Kayla Childs, a.k.a Black Buttafly, a Philly-based artist, singer, songwriter, and producer who draws from Patrice Rushen, Herbie Hancock, and Dilla. Having toured with Ms. Lauryn Hill and shared stages with Kamasi Washington, Childs brings “soulful sounds and vulnerable vibes”.
Rounding out the quartet is Asher Kurtz, guitarist, producer, and mix engineer who fuses live guitar, tape loops, and SP-404 sampling into his improvisational language. His collaborations span Dawn Richard, Terri Lyne Carrington, and last year’s Pique-nique presentation of Joseph Shabason’s Welcome to Hell.
Unheard will be held in a private loft in Greenpoint featuring a vintage 4-point Klipsch sound system and comfortable seating arrangements.
